My time has come to leave this world

Description

My time has come to leave this world

My time has come to leave this world and I must admit, I can’t complain
I’ve reached an age many would have liked and fought to achieve in vain

I’ve been grateful for its blessings and the joys it has sent my way
For the company of many of you, dear friends, which I hope I did repay

Our country has changed a lot in my life and sadly some of it not for the good
But like all of us here that’s outside our control so let’s not dwell on what might be, if only it could.

I leave you with many good memories, that is, I hope that that is the case.
And no doubt with photographs of us here and there, in casual attire or straight lace.
We’ve had our laughs and you showed me you cared, and helped me as the years did unroll.
I’ll never forget your understanding and the virtues so many of you did extoll.
Please celebrate my mortal life, as simple as it has been.
And then get on and enjoy your years ahead, they’ll pass quickly. When you get to my age, you’ll know what I mean
My flame now extinguished, formalities now near their end. To you my friends and family, my final farewell and best wishes I do send.

About the Author

Keith Stokes-Smith was brought up in Solihull, moving to Worcestershire in 1997. Writing poems came easy to him in his twenties and early thirties.

In 2016, his mother passed away. Two weeks later, on a train journey to London, he belatedly wrote a bespoke poem for her funeral and wrote it as if she had composed it to be read out by her at her funeral; a strange concept you might think. From then on he found himself uncontrollably inspired to write more adopting words spoken by fictitious people of fictitious ages in fictitious circumstances. In essence, he has tried to be in the mind of the reader. His poems may be considered somewhat unique coupled very often with them having a sense of humour.
