I’ll not be remembered in time to come

Description

I’ll not be remembered in time to come

I’d admit I am old by today’s norms
Certainly, a little wrinkled and going grey
And maybe my sight and hearing are fading somewhat
But there’s still much I can do and say

My brain is, well, was full of substance as worldly as I am
And I trust I used it wisely during the years my life did span

I’ve striven to advance myself
To achieve the rewards effort procures,
Not always successful but then to try again
It’s all worth the perseverance one endures

I’ll not be remembered in time to come
For my contribution to mankind has been quite small
But I know in my heart that I did all that I could
Lacking or otherwise, the wherewithal.

I shall miss the Last night of the Proms
The Olympics and Commonwealth Games
Mahler’s 8th, Elgar and everything English
A monarchist proudly loves and proclaims
Thank you for joining me here today
Taking time out and travelling from near and afar
Be you family, friends or distant acquaintances
It was nice to have known you, whoever you are.

About the Author

Keith Stokes-Smith was brought up in Solihull, moving to Worcestershire in 1997. Writing poems came easy to him in his twenties and early thirties.

In 2016, his mother passed away. Two weeks later, on a train journey to London, he belatedly wrote a bespoke poem for her funeral and wrote it as if she had composed it to be read out by her at her funeral; a strange concept you might think. From then on he found himself uncontrollably inspired to write more adopting words spoken by fictitious people of fictitious ages in fictitious circumstances. In essence, he has tried to be in the mind of the reader. His poems may be considered somewhat unique coupled very often with them having a sense of humour.
