I knew this day was coming

Description

I knew this day was coming

I knew this day was coming, I knew it was beyond my control
Taken from me is all I had, my life, my body, my whole
Unhappy as I may be by this, and the future I’ve had to surrender
I hope that in my passing, you’ll have time to reflect and remember
The joyous days we had together, in our youth and as time went on
Holidays, weddings and christenings, now all of these have gone
Thank you for being there, in the good times and the bad
And whilst I know it may be difficult, please try not to be too sad.

Our fondness for each other may prompt a tear or two
Sadly, no longer am I able to smile, to reflect, and think of you.
But looking to tomorrow and the days that lie ahead,
The opportunities and joys they offer are now yours, your path to tread
Follow that path wisely; be honourable, caring and true
Value your friends and family, these things I now ask of you.

About the Author

Keith Stokes-Smith was brought up in Solihull, moving to Worcestershire in 1997. Writing poems came easy to him in his twenties and early thirties.

In 2016, his mother passed away. Two weeks later, on a train journey to London, he belatedly wrote a bespoke poem for her funeral and wrote it as if she had composed it to be read out by her at her funeral; a strange concept you might think. From then on he found himself uncontrollably inspired to write more adopting words spoken by fictitious people of fictitious ages in fictitious circumstances. In essence, he has tried to be in the mind of the reader. His poems may be considered somewhat unique coupled very often with them having a sense of humour.
